Napier is the most consistently Art Deco city in the world: after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on 3 February 1931 destroyed the centre, the CBD was rebuilt in the 1930s styles and more than 100 of those buildings still stand, most heritage-listed. The quake also lifted the land several metres, draining the Ahuriri Lagoon, so the airport and suburbs such as Onekawa and Tamatea sit on reclaimed ground, and some inland streets still carry 'quay' or 'bay' names. It is a compact, walkable, sunny east-coast base in Hawke's Bay, better for architecture, wine and beaches than for nightlife.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Marine Parade, Tennyson Street and Emerson Street are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Public buses run to Hastings and Havelock North via Taradale every 20–30 min on weekdays, hourly Saturday and two-hourly Sunday, with no evening service, so check the timetable first. Taxis are relatively inexpensive. A car is the practical option for wineries, Waimarama and Cape Kidnappers.

Watch out

Safety

Napier is a small, calm city and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are sunburn and surf on the beaches, infrequent evening buses, and the Napier–Taupō road with no fuel stops: fill up before you leave.
  • Buses stop in the evening and are infrequent at weekends: plan the last one or book a taxi.
  • Book accommodation up to a year ahead for the February Art Deco Festival; the town fills.
  • The Napier–Taupō road (State Highway 5) has EV chargers but no fuel stations: leave Taupō with at least 150 km of fuel.
  • Cape Kidnappers access is by booked tractor-trailer tour from Te Awanga, not by walking the beach at will; check tide and tour times.
