  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

The Bronx is the only New York City borough on the mainland, north of Manhattan and reachable by subway in 30–45 minutes. It holds the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, Yankee Stadium, Arthur Avenue's Italian blocks and City Island. Almost everyone visits on a day trip from Manhattan rather than sleeping here.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Subway lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, B and D link Manhattan to the Bronx; Metro-North (Harlem, Hudson, New Haven lines) covers areas without subway. Subway lines mostly run north–south, so crosstown trips need buses or a car. NYC Ferry's Soundview route serves the southeast Bronx. Use a MetroCard or OMNY tap; fares are flat per ride.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Manhattan

go

Door to door: 30–45 min

Subway 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, B or D southbound

The default base; most Bronx trips start and end here.

Brooklyn

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Subway via Manhattan, or Metro-North plus subway

Separate day; not combined with a Bronx day.

Queens

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Subway and bus via Manhattan or the Bronx

Long crosstown ride; plan one cluster, not the whole borough.

Staten Island

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Subway to the ferry, then the free Staten Island Ferry

Too far for a same-day Bronx pairing.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Manhattan (recommended base)

Most visitors sleep in Manhattan and day-trip north; subway lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, B and D run into the Bronx.

Mott Haven / South Bronx

Closest Bronx neighborhood to Manhattan, with new hotels near the 138 St–Grand Concourse stops; short subway ride to Midtown.

Riverdale

Quiet residential area of detached houses on Hudson bluffs; Metro-North Hudson Line, few hotels.

Watch out

Safety

The Bronx is a normal big-city borough: the tourist sights (zoo, gardens, stadium, Arthur Avenue) are busy and fine by day. Use ordinary city sense at night, keep to lit main streets, and don't wander unfamiliar South Bronx blocks after dark.
  • Subway and bus lines mostly run north–south; crossing the borough east–west is slow.
  • The Cross-Bronx Expressway is often jammed — avoid driving it at rush hour.
  • Yankee Stadium bans backpacks and large bags; only bags under 14 inches are allowed.
  • Some South Bronx blocks have higher street crime than Manhattan tourist zones; stay aware at night.
  • Zoo and garden tickets are cheaper online and dated; buy ahead in summer.
