Baclayon is Bohol's first Spanish town, founded in 1595, and holds the Church of the Immaculate Conception, one of the oldest stone churches in the Philippines, plus more than 60 ancestral houses along the main road. Most travellers see it as a 3-4 hour stop from Tagbilaran or Panglao; a night here buys you the Wednesday market and a 05:00 dolphin boat to Pamilacan Island.

Getting around

Jeepneys from Tagbilaran pass through Baclayon (about ₱8) and stop outside Bohol Provincial Hospital on J. Torralba Street; they are signed Albur, Loay or Loboc. Tricycles from Tagbilaran cost about ₱70-90 and habal-habal motorbikes about ₱50-60. Within town everything in Poblacion is walkable in 10-15 minutes. Taxis are rare and expensive in Bohol.

Watch out

Safety

Baclayon is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are on the road and on the water: unhelmeted habal-habal rides, unlicensed boats, and strong sun on the 05:00 dolphin trips. Use tricycles, book boats through the tourism centre, and keep valuables out of sight at the market.
  • Habal-habal motorbikes often have no helmet and no regulation: use tricycles if you want a safer ride.
  • Agree the fare before you get in; habal-habal prices are negotiable and tourists are quoted high.
  • Do not buy dried manta ray at the market or in dried-fish stalls; it encourages hunting of a protected species.
  • Ferries to and from Bohol fill up in Holy Week and at Christmas; book ahead.
  • Church and museum hours can change for Mass and fiestas: check locally before you go.
