Carleton Place is a town of about 13,000 on the Mississippi River, 45–50 minutes west of downtown Ottawa on Highway 7. It grew around a waterfall mill site and is now a suburb with a small, walkable Bridge Street core. Most travellers use it as a night's sleep or a lunch stop on the Ottawa–Perth–Smiths Falls loop, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

There is no public transit in Carleton Place. The Bridge Street core is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end; everything else, including the Highway 7 motels and big-box stores, needs a car, taxi or rideshare. Highway 7 and Highway 15 meet in town.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 7, unlit river and lake edges, and ticks in tall grass from spring to fall.
  • No public transit: without a car you are limited to the Bridge Street core.
  • Mississippi Lake National Wildlife Area closes to public access 15 September – 15 December, except the McIntyre Creek boat launch.
  • Small-town kitchens and the pub close early on weeknights; check hours before a late arrival.
  • Winter driving on Highway 7: snow and ice, and long gaps between services.
