Aranjuez is a royal town 50 km south of Madrid, at the junction of the Tagus and Jarama rivers, and a UNESCO Cultural Landscape since 2001. It was the springtime residence of the Spanish court, and the palace, the formal gardens and the tree-lined Doce Calles walks are the reason to come. The centre is small, flat and walkable, so most travellers see it in a day and sleep in Madrid.

Getting around

Walk: the centre and the gardens are flat and compact. Cercanías C-3 links Aranjuez to Madrid Atocha, Sol and Chamartín in 45–55 min. A tourist road-train (chiquitrén) runs from behind the Royal Palace with Spanish and English commentary and a combined museum-and-boat ticket. Watch out

Safety

Aranjuez is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are summer heat on the unshaded walks, pickpockets on the C-3 into Madrid, and narrow centre streets where double parking is common and illegal.
  • Summer afternoons are hot with little shade on the Doce Calles: go early, carry water and a hat.
  • Blue-lined street parking in the centre is paid during business hours; underground parking in Calle Valera is guarded and about €1 (≈ US$2) per hour (check).
  • The chiquitrén wagons are open and unheated, so skip it in rain or cold.
  • Long walks and the Vía Pecuaria have no shade and patchy phone signal: tell your hotel where you are going.
