Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Venice is a lagoon city of about 250,000 people, built on water, with no cars in the historic centre. Two nights on the island buys you the two quiet windows — before 09:00 and after 20:00 — that day-trippers never see. Sleep in San Marco only if you want the postcard at dawn; Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello are cheaper and calmer.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No cars in the historic centre: you walk, or you take a vaporetto (water bus) on the Grand Canal and to the islands. Buy a 24 h, 48 h or 72 h ACTV travel pass if you plan more than a couple of rides; single rides are expensive. Water taxis are fast and costly. Expect bridges with steps — a rolling suitcase is a liability.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Murano and Burano

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h each way

Vaporetto from Fondamente Nove, about 40 min to Murano, then 35 min to Burano

Glass on Murano, painted houses on Burano; go early, the boats fill up.

Lido

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Vaporetto from San Zaccaria or Santa Maria Elisabetta

Beach and a break from the crowds; bikes can be rented on the island.

Torcello

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Vaporetto to Burano, then a short connecting boat

Quiet and historic, but the round trip eats half a day.

Mestre

skip

Door to door: About 30 min

Train or bus from Piazzale Roma, about 15–20 min

Mainland transport hub, not a sight; useful only for cheaper beds or onward trains.

Verona

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

High-speed or regional train from Venezia Santa Lucia

Roman arena and a compact old town; an easy full day.

Padua (Padova)

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Regional train from Venezia Santa Lucia, about 30 min

Scrovegni Chapel needs a timed booking; the rest of the centre is walkable.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

San Marco

The postcard: basilica, Doge's Palace and the Piazza on your doorstep. Highest prices, most crowds, hardest with bags.

Cannaregio

Residential, near the train station and the Jewish ghetto; good value and quieter evenings.

Dorsoduro

Student quarter with the Guggenheim and Accademia; budget rooms and a local bar scene.

Castello

East of San Marco along the 'tail of the fish'; calmer, still walkable to the main sights.

San Polo

Rialto Bridge and the market; central, busy by day, quiet after the crowds leave.

Santa Croce

Where buses and cars arrive at Piazzale Roma; practical for one night with luggage.

Watch out

Safety

Venice is a safe city; the real risks are pickpockets on crowded vaporetti and around Rialto, overpriced tourist restaurants, and winter acqua alta flooding low streets. Keep bags zipped in front and check the tide forecast in cold months.
  • Acqua alta (high water) floods low squares, usually in the colder months; sirens sound and raised walkways go up. Check the tide forecast before a winter trip.
  • Day-trippers on peak days must pay an Access Fee (€5 (≈ US$6)) online in advance; overnight guests are exempt but must register.
  • Restaurants with touts and photo menus near San Marco and Rialto charge the most; walk 10 minutes inland.
  • Pickpockets work the vaporetti, Piazzale Roma and the Rialto area.
  • Cobblestones and marble steps damage hard suitcase wheels and are noisy at night — pack soft-wheeled bags.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for VCE: ATVO and ACTV last departures, Alilaguna water-bus fallback, water-taxi rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: San Marco, Rialto and San Polo, Dorsoduro and Accademia, Cannaregio and the station.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Basilica, Doge's Palace, Accademia, Guggenheim) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Acqua alta and Access Fee fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
