Cieszyn is a small border town in the Silesian Voivodeship, 33,500 people, split from its twin Český Těšín by the River Olza. The old town is compact and walkable: a market square, a castle hill with an 11th-century rotunda, two museums and a brewery. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a stop between Katowice and the Beskid mountains.

Getting around

The old town is small enough to cover on foot in half a day. City buses reach outer districts and nearby villages; the bus and railway stations sit next to each other north of the centre. Crossing to Český Těšín is a walk over the river bridge, no border check.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are icy pavements in winter, unlit riverside paths after dark and cross-border confusion over currency and transport tickets.
  • The Polish and Czech sides use different currencies: złoty in Cieszyn, koruna in Český Těšín. Card is widely accepted, but carry a little cash.
  • Some museums keep short hours and close one weekday: check the official site before you travel.
  • The castle houses a design centre, so parts of the building may be closed to visitors.
  • Summer weekends and festival dates (April film festival, early October border festival) fill the small hotels: book ahead.
