Heredia is a mid-sized university town in the Central Valley, about 15–20 min from Juan Santamaría airport and 30–45 min from San José by road. Its downtown is compact and walkable — central square, 1797 church, the El Fortín tower, two markets — and the surrounding cantons (Barva, San Rafael) hold coffee farms and hill parks. Most travellers use it as an airport-adjacent first or last night, or a language-school base, rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

Downtown Heredia is walkable end to end in about 20–25 min. Short taxi hops inside the centre run under ₡1,000 (2026 estimate). The urban train links Heredia with San José (Estación al Atlántico) and Alajuela at commuting hours only and gets crowded; stations sit away from the airport. Buses from San José (Amarillas, Tibás and others) and Tuasa toward Alajuela serve Heredia. For the hills (Barva, San Rafael, Monte de la Cruz) use a taxi, ride-hail or your own car.

Watch out

Safety

Heredia is a normal, busy university town and generally fine by day in the centre. Take official taxis only, keep phones out of sight on buses and around the markets, and treat the hill trails as daytime-only.
  • Use only official taxis — red with a yellow triangle, or airport-authorised orange shuttles. Unofficial taxis and blue-circle porteadores are linked to crime reports.
  • The urban train runs at commuting hours only and is very crowded; it does not serve the airport terminal.
  • El Fortín is a monument closed to the public — view it from outside.
  • Afternoon rain is normal in the green season; carry a light rain shell.
  • Trails and rivers in the hills (e.g. Sendero Tururu) are not for swimming; run-off from farms and housing affects water quality.
