Forchheim is a small Franconian town, 28,600 people, with a preserved medieval centre and four working breweries. It was a Kaiserpfalz, a resting place for emperors travelling the empire in the 10th century and later. Trains from Nuremberg, Erlangen and Bamberg make it an easy stop; the wooded Kellerberg with its beer cellars is the thing you cannot do elsewhere.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is flat and small, and the station is about 10 minutes east of the centre. Citybus 261 runs to the Kellerberg; by car there is a large car park at the foot of the hill. A bike helps for day trips the trains do not reach.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are a beer too many on the Kellerberg hill and the walk back down in the dark, plus pickpockets only in the usual crowded festival crush.
  • Kellerberg beer cellars open from about 11:00 in season and close in bad weather: check before walking up.
  • Several breweries close one or two days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday are common): check the day before.
  • Annafest in late July fills every bed in town: book weeks ahead or sleep in Bamberg or Nuremberg.
  • Cash is normal in the small breweries; not all take cards.
