HuntsvilleHuntsville, Ontario

Base here 2 nights for Arrowhead and Algonquin's west gate; day-trippers from Toronto should leave by 07:00 to beat Highway 11 cottage traffic.

Huntsville is the largest town in Muskoka and the practical base for Algonquin Provincial Park's west gate, 40 km east on Highway 60. Downtown is walkable in 15 minutes, the lakes and trails sit within a short drive, and summer weekends fill with Toronto cottage traffic. Two nights covers the town and one park day; three if you want Arrowhead and a beach day too.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Downtown Huntsville is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Everything else — Arrowhead, Limberlost, the Algonquin gate, the beaches — needs a car. The Corridor 11 bus runs three trips a day Monday to Friday between Huntsville and Orillia, with no service on holidays or in the last weeks of December.

Chain hotels with parking and pools; a 5-minute drive from downtown, best if you arrive by car.

Highway 60 east toward the park

Resorts and lodges near Hidden Valley and the Algonquin gate; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Huntsville is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 60, cold water on the lakes, and black bears and ticks on backcountry trails.
  • Summer weekends and fall-colour weekends jam Highway 11 northbound on Friday afternoon and southbound on Sunday: drive mid-morning or after 19:00.
  • Arrowhead and Algonquin day-use permits can sell out on winter weekends and holiday Mondays: reserve online before you drive.
  • Many restaurants and resorts close or cut hours from late October to May; check before booking a shoulder-season trip.
  • Winter driving needs real snow tires; Highway 60 into Algonquin can close in storms.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the trails and back roads east of town.
