Farnham is a small Surrey market town with a Norman castle, a free museum and a Georgian high street, about an hour by train from London Waterloo. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside a 15-minute walk of the station. Most travellers pass through in a day; the town earns a night only if you plan to walk the North Downs Way or visit Alice Holt Forest and Frensham Ponds.

A low-crime market town; the real risks are unlit towpaths and footpaths after dark, wet leaves on pavements in autumn, and drinking on an empty stomach on West Street.
