Frankfurt an der OderFrankfurt (Oder)
One night, or a half-day stop between Berlin and Poland. The old centre is small; cross the bridge to Słubice for cheap lunch and fuel.
Frankfurt an der Oder is a small border town 100 km east of Berlin, not the big Frankfurt in Hesse. The rebuilt Marktplatz, the Kleist-Museum and the Oder promenade fill half a day; the twin town of Słubice across the river is a 15-minute walk and a different country. Most travellers use it as a rail stop toward Poznań or Warsaw, or as a cheap base for the eastern Brandenburg countryside.

- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Watch out
Safety
- Do not confuse this town with Frankfurt am Main: check the station code and the train destination before boarding.
- PKP Intercity trains to Poland need a seat reservation; Eurail and Interrail passholders pay a supplement (about 17 zł).
- English is less common than in Berlin; a few German phrases help in shops and at the station.
- The border bridge to Słubice is open, but carry your passport or ID: checks can happen.
