Llanfair Caereinion

One night, or a half-day: ride the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in, walk the town in 45 min, eat at the Goat, leave.

Llanfair Caereinion is a small town on the River Banwy in Powys, about 8 miles west of Welshpool, with a population around 1,800. It sits on the site of a Roman fort and is the western terminus of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, a 2 ft 6 in narrow-gauge line about 8.5 miles long. There is no station on the national rail network and buses are infrequent, so most visitors arrive by the heritage railway or by car on the A458. The town itself is a short walk; the reason to come is the railway, the river and the quiet.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk in under an hour. The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway runs from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool via Castle Caereinion, about 8.5 miles. Owen's Travel runs buses 89 and 87 from Welshpool and 84 from Newport, but services are not frequent: check times before you rely on them. A car is the practical way to reach the surrounding villages and the A458.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet rural town and one of the safer places in the UK. The real risks are narrow roads, patchy mobile signal, fast-changing weather and infrequent buses: tell someone your plan if you walk the hills.
  • Buses 89, 87 and 84 are infrequent: check the timetable before you plan a day around them.
  • The heritage railway does not run every day and has a seasonal timetable: check the official site before travelling.
  • Rural roads are narrow with passing places; drive slowly and expect farm traffic.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the Banwy valley: download maps and tickets before you arrive.
