Bishop Auckland is a small County Durham town whose one big draw is Auckland Castle, the country residence of the Bishops of Durham for eight centuries and now the centre of a gallery-and-garden project. The town itself is quiet, the sights sit within a 15-minute walk of Market Place, and the surrounding villages add a Saxon church, a Roman fort and two country estates. It works as a half-day or one-night stop on a Durham or Darlington trip, not as a base for a week.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Market Place to the castle is about 5 min, and the railway station is a 10-min walk south. Buses 1, 5 and 6 link Darlington and Durham, and Hodgson's 87/89 reach Escomb and Binchester. For Raby Castle, Locomotion or Kynren, a car or taxi is the realistic option.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet town and safe by day; the usual UK advice applies. Take a taxi after dark around the station and West Auckland, and expect uneven pavements and steep castle stairs.
  • Auckland Castle, the Spanish Gallery and the Mining Art Gallery close on Mondays and Tuesdays and shut in winter: check the Auckland Project site before you travel.
  • Kynren runs on Saturday evenings only, July to mid-September, and needs a dated ticket booked ahead; parking costs extra and outside food is not allowed.
  • The railway station has no waiting room or toilets, and the last buses to Durham and Darlington run in the evening: check the last departure before a late castle visit.
  • Newgate Shopping Centre is largely empty; do not plan a shopping trip around it.
