Wemotaci is an Atikamekw reserve of Haute-Mauricie on the Saint-Maurice River, reached by forest road, rail or a small clay airfield. There is no hotel and almost no visitor infrastructure: the reason to come is the annual pow-wow in early September, the old reserve site, and the river and snowmobile country around it. Most travellers sleep in La Tuque.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable. Everything outside it is forest road: route 461 (25) toward La Tuque, forest road 450 (22) toward Parent and the Gouin dam, and the east-bank road up the Saint-Maurice. Fuel at Wemogaz, 1 rue Acokan; fill up before any long run.

Safety

Low crime, high isolation. The real risks are distance, gravel logging roads, patchy phone signal and summer forest fires: go in daylight, with fuel and water, and leave your plan with someone.
  • No hotel in the village: arrange a bed in La Tuque or ask locally before you go.
  • Forest roads are gravel, unsigned in places and used by logging trucks: daylight driving only, full tank, no phone signal in stretches.
  • Forest fires have forced evacuations here before (2010): check the Québec fire agency before a summer trip.
  • Cell coverage is patchy; tell someone your route and expected arrival time.
  • Winter travel means snowmobile or a properly equipped vehicle, not a summer car.
