Peñíscola is a Templar castle on a rock, ringed by a walled old town and 5 km of sand, on the Costa del Azahar between Valencia and Barcelona. It is small: the historic core is walkable in an afternoon, and the town's real draw is pairing that with beach time or the Serra d'Irta hills just south. Summer crowds are heavy — the population swells from about 8,000 to well over 100,000 — so spring and early autumn are the better window.

Local buses link the beaches, port and centre in season, and intercity buses stop at Plaça de la Constitució.
