Ansbach

Give Ansbach one night, or a half-day stop between Nuremberg and Rothenburg: the old town, residence and court garden fit in 3–4 hours on foot.

Ansbach is the small administrative capital of Middle Franconia and a former margravial residence, 30–40 minutes by train from Nuremberg. Its sights sit inside a walkable old town under a kilometre across, so it works as a half-day stop or a quiet one-night base between Nuremberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the Franconian Lake District rather than a destination in itself.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

Walk. The old town, residence and court garden are all inside about 1 km. Park outside the old town: lanes are narrow, one-way and partly pedestrian. Regional trains and the S4 connect Nuremberg, Würzburg and Rothenburg via Steinach.

Old town (Altstadt)

Everything on foot: residence, both churches and the court garden within 10 minutes. Best for one night.

Around the station

5–10 min walk to the old town; practical for early trains toward Nuremberg, Würzburg or Rothenburg.

Wasserzell and the outskirts

Cheaper country inns about 3 km (1.9 mi) out; you need a car or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk small city; the real issues are Sunday closures, thin rural bus timetables and unlit paths along the court garden after dark. Standard German emergency numbers apply.
  • Shops close on Sundays; many restaurants and pubs also close Sunday or Monday.
  • The synagogue can only be seen on a guided tour: check times before you go.
  • The residence is a working government building: parts can be closed for events.
  • Rural buses, including the 805 to Dinkelsbühl, run a thin timetable; check the last return.
