Yountville

Base here 1–2 nights if you booked a tasting or a table months ahead; otherwise sleep in Napa and drive up for a half-day.

Yountville is a one-street wine town of about 3,000 people in the middle of Napa Valley, and it is a restaurant and tasting-room destination rather than a sightseeing one. Almost everything sits on or just off Washington Street, so you can park once and walk. One night covers the core; two nights lets you add a winery or two and a Napa day. Book the famous tables and tastings first, then build the trip around them.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. VINE Transit runs regional buses to Napa and Vallejo with connections toward San Francisco; a local trolley service has operated in town but its status changes, so check before relying on it. For wineries outside the centre you need a car, a bike, or a hired driver — tasting and driving do not mix.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Washington Street

The walkable core: restaurants, tasting rooms and most inns within 10 minutes on foot. Book early; this is the whole town.

Yount Street and Madison Street

One block back from Washington Street; quieter, still a 5–10 min walk to dinner.

Napa or St. Helena (outside town)

Cheaper and larger choice of rooms; 20–30 min drive each way, so you need a car or a designated driver.

Watch out

Safety

Yountville is a small, low-crime town and feels safe on foot day and night. The real risks are the ones you bring: drinking and driving on CA-29, heat on summer afternoons, and cyclists sharing the valley roads.
  • Book The French Laundry and Bouchon weeks to months ahead; walk-ins rarely work.
  • Wine tasting adds up fast: many rooms charge US$40–75 per person and waive it only with a bottle purchase.
  • Do not drive after tastings. Use a hired driver, a tour, or spit.
  • Summer afternoons hit 32–35°C (90–95°F); mornings are the comfortable window.
  • Rooms in harvest season (Sep–Oct) and on event weekends can double in price.

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for SFO, OAK and STS: last VINE departures field-checked, rideshare and taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Washington Street core, Yount Street and Madison Street, and the Veterans Home grounds.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (French Laundry, Bouchon, Domaine Chandon, Napa Valley Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tasting-room fee and waiver table so the budget calculator can price a two-winery day.
