Give Regensburg one full day and one night: the medieval centre is compact, walkable in a day, and worth an overnight to see it after the day-trippers leave.
Regensburg is a UNESCO-listed medieval city on the Danube, 1 h 20 min by train from Munich and about 1 h from Nuremberg. Its old town survived WWII largely intact, so the draw is the streets themselves: the Gothic cathedral, the 12th-century Stone Bridge and the sausage kitchen by the river. Most travellers see it as a day trip; one night is better.

- Parking inside the centre is restricted; use a garage on the edge and walk in.
- Many churches close to visitors during services; the cathedral is free but no entry during mass.
