Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Delft is a compact canal town between The Hague and Rotterdam, small enough to cross on foot in ten minutes and known for its blue-and-white ceramics, its two churches and its Vermeer connection. Most visitors come as a day trip from The Hague or Rotterdam, but one night lets you see the Markt after the day crowds leave. It also works as a quieter base for the region.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic centre is pedestrianised and walkable end to end in about 10 minutes. Trams 1 and 19 and regional buses serve the station and the north of the city; the OV-chipkaart or a day pass covers them. Bikes rent at the station (ID plus a deposit; about €7.50 a day for a simple bike). Cars are discouraged: the centre is largely car-free, street parking near it is permit-only and fines run to about €70.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

The Hague

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Direct train from Delft to Den Haag Centraal or Den Haag HS

Mauritshuis and the Binnenhof; tram 1 also links the two centres.

Rotterdam

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Direct train from Delft to Rotterdam Centraal

Architecture, Markthal and the harbour; easy half-day.

Scheveningen

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Tram 1 from Delft through The Hague to the coast

Beach and pier; a full day if you combine it with The Hague.

Schiedam

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train to Schiedam Centrum, then walk or local bus

Windmill district and jenever heritage; a half-day at most.

Zoetermeer

skip

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Train or RandstadRail via The Hague

Modern suburbs and a lake; little for a short trip.

Vlaardingen

skip

Door to door: About 40 min

Train towards Rotterdam, then local bus

Working river town; only if you have a specific reason.

Maassluis

caution

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Train to Maassluis Centrum, then walk to the old harbour

Small historic harbour; pair it with a ferry or a river walk.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Around the Markt and Oude Delft

The postcard centre: churches, canals and restaurants on the doorstep; book early and expect the highest rates.

Near Delft station

Best for a one-night stop with bags: trains, trams and bike rental at the door, 5–10 min walk to the Markt.

Beestenmarkt area

Tree-shaded square of cafés and bars, 2 min from the Markt; lively in the evening, so ask for a room away from the square.

Watch out

Safety

Delft is a low-risk town; the real hazards are fast bikes in pedestrian streets, canal edges without rails at night, and parking fines if you misread a permit sign.
  • Bikes have priority and ride fast in the pedestrian streets; step aside rather than stopping dead in the lane.
  • A floor tile showing only a 'P' can mean permit-holders-only parking: read the sign or you risk a fine.
  • Taxis are allowed in pedestrian streets and can drive quickly at night.
  • The New Church tower climb is the only tower you can ascend; the Old Church tower is not open to climbers.
  • Church and museum hours change by season and close on Sundays: check before you go.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Delft. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep; Apr and Sep for fewer crowds · avoid Nov–Feb (short, grey days); King's Day and school holidays for crowds · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 7 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AMS and RTM: last-train times, taxi fallback and an overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Markt, Oude Delft, Beestenmarkt and the station quarter.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Nieuwe Kerk, Oude Kerk, Prinsenhof, Royal Delft) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Rain and crowd fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
