Tartu

Give Tartu 2 nights: walk the Old Town and Toomemägi in half a day, then the National Museum and Supilinn. Skip it only if you have under 3 days in Estonia.

Tartu is Estonia's second city and its university town, 185 km southeast of Tallinn and the oldest city in the Baltics. Almost everything a visitor wants sits within a 30-minute walk: Town Hall Square, Toomemägi hill, the university, and the Estonian National Museum 2 km north. It is a two-night stop, not a day trip from Tallinn.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Estonia ↗Estonia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Estonian sources for your passport.
  • Estonia ↗The land border with Russia is not a route for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near it.
  • Estonia ↗Winter tyres are required in the cold months; rental cars include them, but confirm if you drive.

Old Town / Raekoja plats

Everything walkable, best for a short stay with bags; quietest rooms are off the square itself.

Ülikooli and Riia street area

Between the Old Town and the bus station; cafés, bars and student life, 5–10 min walk to the square.

Near the railway station (Vaksali)

Cheaper, 1 km (0.6 mi) from the centre, about a 20-min walk or bus line 3.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe, including at night in the centre. The real risks are icy pavements in winter, dark unlit streets away from the centre, and drink-driving on rural roads if you hire a car.
  • Friday afternoon buses to Tallinn and Sunday-night buses back are packed during term time — book ahead or take the train.
  • The evening bus from Riga to Tartu no longer runs; the last departure from Riga is 13:15.
  • Buses coming from the Russian border at Narva can be heavily delayed.
  • Winter days are short and wet; plan indoor sights for Nov–Mar.
