Bolton is a large former cotton town 17 miles north of Manchester, in Greater Manchester since 1974. The centre is small: a Victorian town hall, a free museum, a market and a handful of old pubs. Most visitors come for Bolton Wanderers, the West Pennine Moors or as a cheaper bed near Manchester. One day is enough; two if you walk the moors or catch a match.

Getting around

Bolton is not on the Metrolink tram network. The centre is walkable; use buses for Horwich, Farnworth, Westhoughton and the moors, or the train to Horwich Parkway for the stadium. Taxis are cheap and plentiful in the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Bolton is a normal British town: watch your bag in the centre on weekend nights, avoid unlit cut-throughs after dark, and take the usual care around the interchange. The bigger risks are weather on the moors and match-day crowds.
  • Match days: trains to Horwich Parkway and stadium-area hotels fill up and prices jump; book early.
  • Some pubs and bars in the centre are lively late on weekends; keep to lit main streets.
  • Moor walking: weather turns fast, paths are boggy and phone signal is patchy — carry a paper map.
  • Hall i' th' Wood museum has been closed; check before you travel.
