Grantown-on-Spey is a planned town of 1765 in the Spey valley, 20 miles southeast of Inverness, and has been a Highland holiday resort for two centuries. It is small: the Square and High Street take an hour. What makes it worth a stop is the setting — Anagach Woods on the doorstep, the Cairngorms and Abernethy Forest to the south, the Strathspey Railway and Speyside distilleries nearby. Without a car you are tied to a handful of buses.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice; the town itself is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Stagecoach X37 links Inverness, Tomatin, Carrbridge, Dulnain Bridge, Grantown, Nethy Bridge and Boat of Garten, five buses Monday–Friday and three on Saturday. Bus 37 runs from Aviemore via Boat of Garten and Nethy Bridge every two hours Monday–Saturday, four on Sunday. Taxis are limited; book ahead.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are single-track roads, winter ice, midges in summer and long waits for the next bus. Tell someone your route if you walk the hills.
  • Bus frequencies are low and Sunday service is thin: check the timetable before you rely on it.
  • Single-track and moorland roads around the Cairngorms ice up in winter; drive to conditions.
  • Midges are worst on still, damp evenings from June to August — repellent and long sleeves help.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G only; 5G had not reached the area as of 2023.
  • Many Highland games and shows are one-day events: dates shift, so confirm before travelling.
