Monroe is a small Lake Erie city and the seat of Monroe County, about 40 minutes south of Detroit on I-75 and 25 minutes north of Toledo. It is best known as the site of the 1813 River Raisin battle and as George Armstrong Custer's boyhood home. Sights sit within a few blocks of the River Raisin, so a half day covers the core; the rest of the county is farmland, shoreline and small towns.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: downtown is walkable for a few blocks, but the battlefield, the state park and the motel strip are spread along I-75 and US-24. Lake Erie Transit runs local buses; check current routes and times before relying on them. Downtown parking is free for one hour in places — read the signs.
