Keremeos is a village of about 1,500 people in the Similkameen Valley, 340 km east of Vancouver on Highway 3 and the self-titled fruit stand capital of Canada. Nearly a third of its area is orchards, and the dry, sunny valley now grows grapes as well as soft fruit. It works as a single overnight on a Crowsnest Highway drive, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

You need a car. The village is a single highway strip and the sights — Red Bridge, the Grist Mill, Twin Lakes, Hedley — are 3–30 km apart with no useful local transit. BC Transit route 50 runs three days a week between Penticton (about 40 min) and Princeton (about 55 min), and Mountain Man Mike's stops twice a week on its Kaslo–Vancouver run; both are for arriving, not for sightseeing.

Safety

Very safe for a village this size; the real risks are summer heat, wildlife on the Ashnola Road, and long drives on Highway 3 with few services — carry water and fuel.
  • Fruit stands are seasonal: most open roughly June to October and close outside it — check before you detour.
  • Summer highs reach 30–32 °C (86–90 °F) with little shade on the highway strip; carry water.
  • Fuel and food are limited after dark; fill up in Princeton or Osoyoos if you arrive late.
  • Keremeos Columns viewpoint is a roughly three-hour hike each way and access to the rock itself is not permitted — check the BC Parks page before committing.
  • Cell coverage thins on the Ashnola Road and into Cathedral Provincial Park.
