  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Brock is a rural township of about 12,600 people on the Trent-Severn Waterway and Lake Simcoe, in Durham Region east of Toronto. Beaverton is the commercial centre and Cannington holds the municipal office. It is a half-day of heritage buildings, a lock, and ice fishing in winter, best paired with a Durham Region loop rather than a dedicated trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is required: the communities are 10–20 km apart on Regional Roads 12 and 23, with no useful bus service. Drive between Beaverton, Cannington and the locks; distances are short but there are no pavements outside the villages.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Oshawa

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Drive Regional Road 12 south to Highway 7A, then Highway 407 or 401

Chain hotels, the Canadian Automotive Museum and a full restaurant scene.

Uxbridge, Ontario

go

Door to door: About 35 min

Drive Regional Road 23 east, then Regional Road 1

Trail town with a small downtown; good half-day pairing.

Scugog

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive Regional Road 12 south to Port Perry

Port Perry waterfront and shops; the closest proper town.

Door to door: About 50 min

Drive Regional Road 12 south, then Highway 401 east

Mostly suburban; useful for GO train connections to Toronto.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Beaverton

The only real cluster: a B&B, a motel with a bar and grill, and the waterfront. Book ahead in ice-fishing season.

Cannington

Municipal centre with a café and museum; very few beds, so most visitors sleep elsewhere.

Oshawa or Whitby

Chain hotels 45–60 min south; use Brock as a day trip from here.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe: the real risks are rural driving, winter ice and lake ice that is never guaranteed. Check ice thickness with an operator before walking out.
  • No public transit between communities; without a car you are stuck.
  • Museum hours are seasonal and short: the Old Stone Church opens only Jul–Aug, Sundays 2–4 pm.
  • Winter roads ice up and lake ice is never guaranteed safe: go with an operator, not alone.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the back concessions.

  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Beaverton waterfront and Simcoe Street, Cannington Peace Street, the Trent-Severn locks.
  3. Place pages with verified seasonal cutoffs (Old Stone Church, Cannington Centennial Museum, Beaver River Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Winter ice-fishing fixture with operator-only rule so the page can go green in January.
