Go only if you want a quiet waterfront house for 2–3 nights and have a car; without a car, skip it — one weekday bus each way, no shops in walking distance.

North Arm Cove is a small waterfront village on the north side of Port Stephens, about 35 km north of Raymond Terrace off the Pacific Highway. It is the site of Walter Burley Griffin's never-built "Pacific City" plan of 1918, and today it is almost entirely holiday houses: under 500 residents, no shops, no public transport worth using. Come for the water, the quiet and a house with a jetty, not for sightseeing.

Getting around

Drive. There is no public transport inside the village and most roads have no footpath. The 152 bus between Newcastle (Hamilton station) and Hawks Nest stops at the tip of Carrington Road, but only once a day each way and only on weekdays, and the walk from there into the village is not pedestrian-friendly. Speed limit is 80 km/h on the approach roads and 50 km/h inside the village.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the unsealed Carrington–Tahlee road, wildlife on the highway at dusk, bushfire and flood closures in summer, and no phone signal in the black spots. Tell someone your plan before you drive in.
  • No shops, no petrol and no cafés in the village: buy food in Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah or Raymond Terrace before you arrive.
  • The Pacific Highway turnoff has no exit in both directions — check which side you are approaching from before you commit.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra 4G/5G covers most of the village with black spots; Optus and Vodafone are basic 4G, better near the coast.
  • Zoning still restricts permanent dwellings in parts of the village, so almost everything you can book is a short-term holiday rental.
