Donegal Town is a small market town of about 2,700 people at the head of Donegal Bay, where the River Eske meets the estuary below the Bluestack Mountains. The town itself is a half-day on foot — a restored O'Donnell castle, a ruined friary, a plaza called The Diamond — but it works as a base for the south of the county: Murvagh and Rossnowlagh beaches, Lough Eske, Killybegs and the Glencolmcille coast. Two nights is the useful minimum, three if you want a beach day and a hill day. A car changes everything here; buses reach the town but not the beaches.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything worth seeing outside it — Murvagh, Rossnowlagh, Mountcharles, St John's Point, Lough Eske — needs a car; there is no bike hire in town and the nearest car-hire desks are in Letterkenny and Derry. Local Link 293 links Glencolmcille, Killybegs and Mountcharles to town, and Bus Éireann 492 runs 2–3 times a day from Dungloe via Glenties and Ardara.

The Diamond and Castle St

Town centre: castle, abbey, pubs and the main bus stop (often listed as Abbey Hotel) all within a 10-minute walk. Weekend noise from the hotel nightclub until about 2AM.

The Quay

Estuary side, 5–10 min walk from The Diamond; seafood restaurants and the tourist office. Quieter at night.

Lough Eske Rd and Letterkenny Rd

Edge-of-town guesthouses and the big hotels, 10–20 min walk in; you still need a car for the day.

Lough Eske

6 km northeast: castle hotel and lakeside spa, no walkable town. Only for a splurge night.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are weather, unlit rural roads at night and the fast incoming tide on Rossnowlagh beach. Walk the town after dark without worry.
  • No border checks on the road via Enniskillen, but your licence and insurance must be valid for Northern Ireland; speed limits switch to mph.
  • Parking on Rossnowlagh beach is common and risky: the incoming tide moves fast and cars get swamped.
  • Magherabeg Friary is on private land and fenced off as unsafe — view from the road.
  • The Bluestack Centre hostel in Drimarone is refugee accommodation in 2026, not bookable for tourists.
  • Weekend nightclub noise at the central hotels until about 2AM; ask for a room away from it.
  • UK mobile networks do not reach this far into the Republic: sort an Irish or EU eSIM before you arrive.
