Lautrec is a walled hill village in the Tarn, classed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France since 1983, with about 1,800 residents. Its sights fit in a half day: the 14th-century collegiate church, the triangular market hall, the last fortified gate and a working windmill. Pink garlic (ail rose) is the local product, sold at the Friday market and celebrated in August. Most travellers see it as a stop between Albi and Castres, or as a quiet night in the pays de Cocagne.

Getting around
The village is small and walkable; the collegiate church, market hall, convent and Caussade gate are all within about 10 minutes on foot. A path climbs from the windmill to the Calvaire cross for the view south. For anything outside the village you need a car, a bike or a taxi; buses on the Lio network run to Castres, and the Toulouse–Castres rail line passes nearby (check the nearest station and times).

Safety
- Few restaurants and shops: many close one or two days a week and in winter; check before you arrive.
- The windmill only opens and works a few days a year (3rd Sunday of June, mid-September heritage weekend); the outside is visible all year.
- The archaeology exhibition is by appointment only, through the tourist office.
- Narrow medieval lanes and steep steps: hard going with a large suitcase or a stroller.
- Summer afternoons are hot and the village is small; carry water.
