Go only with a booked flight, bed and guided activity: 2–3 nights, Jun–Aug, no taxis, no walking beyond the hamlet.

Resolute is a hamlet of a few hundred people on Cornwallis Island, Nunavut, at almost 75°N — the most practical fly-in base for Canada's High Arctic. There is no road in, no taxi, and no reason to come without a booked flight, bed and activity. Two to three nights covers the hamlet, the beach and a guided day out; longer only if you are on a tour or expedition.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out

Safety

Resolute is a small, safe hamlet, but the environment is the risk: polar bears, sea ice, extreme cold and weather that grounds flights for days. Travel with a local guide outside the hamlet and keep a buffer in your plans.
  • Polar bears are present around the hamlet and on the sea ice: never walk out alone, and follow local advice.
  • Weather can cancel or delay flights for days: build a buffer into any onward booking.
  • There is no hospital; serious medical cases are evacuated by air.
  • Fuel, food and alcohol are expensive and stock is limited: bring what you need and check what the co-op has.
  • Do not walk on sea ice or tundra without a local guide.
