Wigan is an industrial town 17 miles northwest of central Manchester, part of Greater Manchester since 1974 and historically a buffer between Manchester, Liverpool and Preston. The centre is compact and walkable: two stations 100 yards apart, a canal wharf known as Wigan Pier, a market, and the DW Stadium a mile west. It rewards a half-day or one night, not a long stay.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: stations, market, canal and museum sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Buses (Arriva and Stagecoach) cover the wider borough; the Number 8 to Leigh runs every 15 min, about 40 min. Trains link the two stations to Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, Southport and Preston.

The centre is well-policed and fine by day; the real issues are late-night drunks around the clubs and a few outlying estates with no visitor reason to go.
