Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Vernazza is the fourth of the five Cinque Terre villages and the only one with a proper harbour. It is small: about 1,000 residents, one cobbled main street, a castle above the water and a church on the rocks. The train station sits roughly a 10-minute walk above the harbour, and cars cannot enter the village. Two nights is the useful stay: one full day for the village and one hike, plus a buffer for rain or a closed trail.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

On foot only inside the village; the main street from the station to the harbour takes about 10 minutes. The Cinque Terre train line links all five villages and runs frequently; buy a Cinque Terre Card for unlimited train rides and trail access. Boats call at Vernazza harbour in season when the sea allows. A small car park sits about 400 m north of the village, and driving into the centre is not possible.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Corniglia

go

Door to door: Trail about 1 h 30 min; train about 5 min

Hike the coastal trail from above the station, or take the train one stop

The first 10 minutes of the trail give the classic view back over the village and castle; the full path runs through olive terraces.

Monterosso al Mare

go

Door to door: Trail about 1 h 30 min; train about 5 min

Hike northwest from the main street, or take the train

The climb totals roughly 250 m; hike one way and ride back.

Manarola

go

Door to door: About 10 min

Cinque Terre train, two stops south

Best in the late afternoon; the harbour rocks are the swimming spot.

Riomaggiore

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Cinque Terre train to the southern end of the line

The Via dell'Amore path to Manarola has been closed for long stretches: check before counting on it.

Levanto

caution

Door to door: About 15 min

Cinque Terre train north, one stop past Monterosso

A larger town with a sandy beach and better parking; useful if Vernazza beds are full.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Harbour and Piazza Marconi

Rooms above the square and the main street; everything is within a 5-minute walk, but noise carries late into the evening.

Via Roma and the station end

Quieter, closest to the train for early departures and luggage; about 10 minutes on foot down to the water.

Uphill lanes toward the castle

Higher rooms catch breezes and views; expect steps and no lift.

Watch out

Safety

Vernazza is a safe, tiny village; the real risks are the sea (no lifeguards, slippery breakwater rocks), steep wet steps, and pickpockets on crowded summer trains. Keep nothing loose in your pockets on the Cinque Terre line.
  • Trail sections close for landslides or bad weather: check the Cinque Terre park site the morning you plan to hike.
  • Summer trains and the main street are packed between about 10:00 and 17:00; the village is calm before 09:00 and after 19:00.
  • Steps and uneven cobbles everywhere: pack light, and expect no lifts in guest houses.
  • Autumn rain can be heavy; the village flooded badly in 2011 and drains are still a local concern in storms.
  • Restaurant and room prices peak in Jul–Aug; book beds weeks ahead in high season.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Vernazza. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep · avoid Jul–Aug (crowds and heat), late Oct–Mar (rain, trail closures) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for PSA and GOA: last-train times, La Spezia and Levanto fallbacks, luggage-friendly routes.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: harbour and breakwater, main street, castle path, station end.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Belforte castle, Santa Margherita church, trailheads) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Trail-status fixtures so the Corniglia and Monterosso hikes can be marked open or closed the day you read this.
