LaurelLaurel, Montana
Skip as a base unless you have a reason: one half-day for Main Street and Riverside Park, or sleep here as a cheaper Billings stop on I-90.
Laurel is a railroad and refinery town of about 7,200 people on the Yellowstone River, 20 minutes west of Billings on I-90. It has one walkable Main Street, a riverside park with camping, a bowling alley and a handful of diners and bars. Almost everything a visitor wants — the airport, museums, big-box shopping, more restaurants — is in Billings. Come for a half-day, a cheap bed, or the 4th of July parade, not for a multi-day stay.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Watch out
Safety
- No taxi service in town; without a car you are stuck — check any ride options before booking.
- Winter brings ice, snow and occasional highway closures on I-90 and US-212.
- Summer wildfire smoke can cut visibility and air quality for days; check the air-quality index before planning outdoor time.
- Refinery and rail-yard areas are working industrial land: stay on public roads and trails.
