Skip as a base unless you have port business: 1 night for the malecón and Playa Eréndira, or 2–3 nights at Playa Azul for surf.
Lázaro Cárdenas is a working container port on the Michoacán coast, not a resort. The reason to stop is the coast: the malecón along the ship channel, Playa Eréndira 15 minutes west, and the surf beaches at Playa Azul and Nexpa further north. The city itself is a functional grid of hotels, seafood restaurants and a market, with no commercial flights and no passenger trains. Come for the beach and the seafood, keep the city as a bed.
