Nouamghar

Half-day stop on the coast road between Nouakchott and Banc d'Arguin: see the Imraguen dolphin-fishing, walk the beach, then move on. Not a base.

Nouamghar is a small Imraguen fishing village 150 km north of Nouakchott, at the entrance to Cap Timiris and Banc d'Arguin National Park. Its main draw is the traditional dolphin-assisted fishing technique, a beach for swimming, and desert views over the Atlantic. Most travellers pass through for a few hours en route to the park or Nouadhibou.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Mauritania ↗Apply for the e-visa on the official ANRPTS portal and print the approval; visas on arrival ended in January 2025 and the fee is paid in cash at the airport.
  • Mauritania ↗Travel advice differs by region: check your own government's advice for each area on your route, especially in the east and near the Mali border.
  • Mauritania ↗Alcohol is prohibited; do not import or carry it.

Watch out

Safety

Nouamghar is safe for day visits. The main risks are sun exposure, lack of services and driving on sand roads. Travel with a guide or driver who knows the area.
  • No ATM in the village; bring cash (ouguiya or euros).
  • Mobile coverage is patchy; download maps offline.
  • The dolphin-fishing is a working tradition, not a show; timing depends on tides and fish runs.
