Athens is a small Appalachian college town in southeast Ohio, built around Ohio University and a compact Court Street strip of bars, diners and a 1920s cinema. Most visitors come for a campus weekend, a Bobcats game or as a base for Wayne National Forest and the state parks nearby. Two nights covers the town; add a night if you are hiking.

Getting around

Uptown Athens is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Athens Transit runs a small bus network roughly every 30 minutes, no Sunday service, $1 a ride (check). Taxis and ride-hail cover the rest; a car is needed for the forest and state parks.

Athens is a low-crime college town; the real issues are late-night bar crowds on Court Street, unlit rural roads and winter ice. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Court Street is a student bar strip: expect crowds and noise on weekend nights and home football weekends.
  • Buses do not run on Sundays; plan a taxi or walk.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in parts of Wayne National Forest and the state parks.
