Haddington is East Lothian's administrative centre and a preserved medieval market town 15 miles east of Edinburgh, just off the A1. It has a 14th-century kirk, a walled garden, a tower house and a distillery nearby, but no railway station of its own — buses X7 and 104 run from Edinburgh in about 50–60 minutes. It works best as a one-night stop or a half-day from Edinburgh, paired with North Berwick, Dunbar or the National Museum of Flight.

Watch out

Safety

Haddington is a small, low-crime market town and is safe for tourists day and night. The real risks are rural roads without pavements, fast A1 traffic, and wet, uneven pavements in winter.
  • No railway station in Haddington itself — nearest are Drem (4 miles north) and East Linton; both need a bus or taxi.
  • Cyclists may not use the A1; take the parallel old road, now the A199.
  • St Mary's Parish Church interior has been closed for rebuilding — check before you travel; entry is normally limited to services.
  • Hailes Castle is fenced off as unsafe — view from outside only.
  • Many rural attractions and distillery tours run seasonal hours; confirm before setting out.
