Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Parma is a flat, walkable Emilia-Romagna city of about 194,000 people, halfway between Milan and Bologna on the main rail line. Its case for a stop is food and a compact medieval core: the Romanesque cathedral and pink-marble baptistery, the Correggio dome, and the Pilotta museums, all inside 20 minutes on foot. Most travellers see it in a day; food travellers and opera-goers stay two nights.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The historic centre is flat and compact, and bikes are common. Taxis wait at the station and opposite the Palazzo del Governatore. The centre has a camera-controlled access zone for local vehicles only, so park in a garage outside it (the largest is behind Teatro Due).

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Torrechiara Castle

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or car toward Langhirano, then a short uphill walk

A 15th-century castle in the hills south of the city; check bus times, they are sparse on Sundays.

Bologna

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Regional or high-speed train from Parma station

Easy half-day or onward stop; trains run frequently.

Bardi

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Train toward Fornovo, then bus or car into the Apennines

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in the hills.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro storico (around Piazza Garibaldi and Strada Cavour)

Everything walkable; quietest rooms are off the main shopping streets.

Near the station (Piazzale Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa)

Best for one night with bags: 10–15 min walk into the core.

Oltretorrente

West of the stream, cheaper and more local; 10–15 min walk to the Duomo.

Watch out

Safety

Parma is a calm, low-risk city; the real annoyances are pickpockets around the station and on market days, and summer heat. Standard precautions are enough.
  • The centre is closed to non-local cars by camera (ZTL); fines arrive by post weeks later.
  • Churches and the Baptistery keep separate, short hours and close over lunch: check each site before you plan the day.
  • Palazzo del Giardino in Parco Ducale is closed to visitors; the park itself stays open.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do the Duomo and Pilotta in the morning.
