Salta is the capital of Salta province, 1,187 m up in the Andes of northern Argentina, and most travellers use it as a base for the region: the Quebrada del Toro, the salt flats, Cafayate's wine valley and the Humahuaca gorge in Jujuy. The city itself has a compact colonial centre around Plaza 9 de Julio, one strong museum (MAAM), a hill with a cable car and a food scene built on empanadas and grilled meat. Three nights is the working minimum; four or five if you add day tours.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: plaza to Balcarce is about 15 min on foot. SAETA buses need a rechargeable card (SUBE does not work here); paying a passenger cash to swipe is common. Taxis and remis use the meter; Uber and Didi also operate. Cable car to Cerro San Bernardo from Parque San Martín, last car up 19:00, last down 19:30.

Watch out

Safety

Salta is one of the calmer big cities in Argentina; the real risks are altitude on day tours, summer storms in the mountains and unlicensed 'combi' taxis. Use metered taxis or Uber at night and keep bags off the ground in the bus terminal.
  • Altitude: the city is 1,187 m and day tours reach 3,400–4,200 m. Take the first day easy and drink coca leaf tea.
  • Summer (Dec–Mar) afternoon thunderstorms and rain can close mountain roads; check the forecast before booking a Quebrada tour.
  • Tren a las Nubes runs April–November only, mostly Wednesday and Saturday; book ahead in high season.
  • Buy tours from an agency office, not a street tout; prices vary a lot for the same itinerary.
  • Card payments convert near the market rate since 2025 — check before relying on cash-only assumptions.
