Rønne is Bornholm's capital and its only airport and major ferry harbour, so almost every trip starts here. The old town is small: cobbled Laksegade and Storegade, half-timbered merchant houses, three museums and a lighthouse, all within a 20-minute walk of the ferry terminal. Most travellers spend one night, hire a bike or pick up a rental car, then move to the coast villages.

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. All island buses start and end at Rønne, so it works as a car-free base for day trips. Bikes are the best way to reach the beaches and the four signed cycle routes out of town; national route 10 circles the island in about 100 km. Parking in the old town is easy at Store Torv, Snellemarket and Ellekongstræde.

Watch out

Safety

Rønne is a low-crime small town; the real risks are cycling on unlit roads at night, strong currents at the beaches and closed kitchens after 21:00 in low season.
  • Ferry and plane seats sell out on summer weekends and around Danish school holidays: book weeks ahead.
  • Many restaurants and museums in Rønne close or cut hours outside Jun–Aug; check before you rely on them.
  • Buses are infrequent in the evening and on Sundays; the last departure from Rønne can leave you stranded in a village.
  • Wind and rain arrive fast on Bornholm even in summer: bring a shell, not just a T-shirt.
