Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Springbrook sits on the McPherson Range behind the Gold Coast, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage area. Four separate sections — Springbrook Plateau, Natural Bridge, Mount Cougal and Numinbah — hold waterfalls, Antarctic beech forest and a rock arch over Cave Creek where glow worms show after dark. Entry is free; the costs are fuel, parking pressure on weekends and the narrow, winding road up.

Why go

  • Purling Brook Falls drops about 100 m into a rainforest gorge, an easy half-day from the coast.
  • The Natural Bridge rock arch over Cave Creek is one of the few places in southeast Queensland where glow worms are visible from a boardwalk.
  • Cool, wet rainforest and Antarctic beech stands that feel nothing like the beaches 40 km (25 mi) away.
  • Free entry and no permit for day walks — the only real cost is the drive.

Cabins, B&Bs and a couple of cafes within a few minutes of the trailheads.

Near the park

Gold Coast (Broadbeach, Robina, Nerang)

Safety

Slippery steps and cliff edges medium

Wear shoes with grip; keep behind barriers at lookouts; the Purling Brook descent is steep.

Getting caught out after dark medium

Carry a torch and a jacket; temperatures drop fast on the plateau and phone signal is patchy.

Storms and flash flooding medium

From November to March check the forecast; creek crossings can rise quickly and tracks close.

Wildlife on the road medium

Drive slowly at dawn and dusk; pademelons and possums cross the range roads.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Natural Bridge boardwalk and Canyon Lookout are paved and suitable for wheelchairs and prams.
  • Purling Brook Falls and Twin Falls circuits involve long flights of steps and are not suitable for limited mobility.
  • Accessible parking and toilets are available at the Natural Bridge and plateau day-use areas.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on marked tracks; shortcutting spreads dieback and weeds through the rainforest.
  • Do not feed or handle wildlife, and keep food sealed — possums raid packs at lookouts.
  • Take all rubbish down the mountain; bins are limited.
  • Carpool where you can; plateau car parks are small and overflow onto the road.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Springbrook?

Nothing. Springbrook is a Queensland national park and day entry is free, including parking at the trailheads. You pay only for camping (booked online) or a commercial tour.

What are the best hikes in Springbrook?

The Purling Brook Falls circuit (about 4 km, 2–3 h) is the classic. Twin Falls is a longer 3–4 h loop, Canyon Lookout is a 15-minute walk, and the Natural Bridge boardwalk is a 30–45 minute easy loop best done at dusk for the glow worms.

When is the best time to visit Springbrook?

April to October for dry tracks and mild temperatures; September and October add wildflowers and birds. December to March is hot, humid and stormy, with leeches and muddy tracks.

Can I see the glow worms without a tour?

Yes. The Natural Bridge boardwalk is open and free; arrive after sunset, use a red-filtered torch and stay on the boardwalk. Tours are optional, not required.

Do I need a 4WD to get to Springbrook?

No. The Gold Coast–Springbrook Road is sealed but narrow and winding; a normal car is fine. Pine Creek Road from Lamington is slower and has unsealed sections.

Is Springbrook the same as Lamington National Park?

No. They are separate parks on the same range, both part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area. Springbrook is closer to the Gold Coast; Lamington is reached via Canungra and has its own walks.
