Belcoo is a 440-person border village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, joined to Blacklion in County Cavan across a river that drains Upper into Lower Lough MacNean. The border has been open and unpatrolled since 1998, so the two villages act as one place. The draw is limestone country: show caves, a boardwalk over blanket bog, and a karst park. You need a car for almost all of it.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the caves, boardwalk and karst park are 5–15 km out on rural roads with no useful bus. The village itself is walkable in 5 minutes, and you can cross to Blacklion on foot. Fill up before you arrive — fuel is cheaper on the Republic side.

Safety

A quiet rural area and one of the safer corners of the UK. The real risks are narrow roads, wet bog and cave terrain, and forgetting which country you are in for insurance and roaming.

  • Cuilcagh boardwalk parking is charged and the bog is a protected habitat: stay on the boardwalk.
