Killorglin is a small Kerry town of about 2,200 people on the River Laune, at the head of the Iveragh Peninsula and on the Ring of Kerry circuit. The town itself is a 1-hour stop; the reason to sleep here is the coast and the Bog Village west of it, and Puck Fair in August. A car makes the outlying sights work; without one you are tied to the Tralee–Killarney bus.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 15 minutes. For the Bog Village, Rossbeigh, Cromane and Caragh Lake you need a car, bike or taxi: Bus Éireann 279 runs every two hours from Tralee via Castlemaine and Milltown to Killorglin, then on to Killarney, about 45 min and 30 min respectively. KGC in the village hires and repairs bicycles.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are narrow roads, fast Atlantic weather and deep water at Rossbeigh. Emergency 112 or 999.
  • Ring of Kerry tour buses run anti-clockwise from Killarney and reach the Bog Village early: start before 09:00 or go clockwise and meet them head-on on narrow roads.
  • Puck Fair (10–12 Aug) fills every bed in town and closes streets; book months ahead or avoid those dates.
  • The South Kerry Greenway is only partly open as of 2026: check before planning a ride.
  • Atlantic weather changes fast; rain gear and a windproof layer every month.
  • Many rural roads are narrow with no hard shoulder; drive on the left and allow more time than the map suggests.
