Kinshasa
Kinshasa is a hire-a-driver city: land in daylight to a pre-booked car, sleep in Gombe, keep every move door to door, and check your government's advice before you book and again before you fly.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
- Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
- Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the DRC authorities or embassy before booking; a visa is usually needed in advance.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Check your government's advice province by province: most governments advise against all travel to the eastern provinces and several other areas, and the US and Canada advise against all travel to the DRC in 2026.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention, and carry the yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is strictly checked at DRC entry.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Photography in public places can lead to detention; do not photograph government buildings, soldiers, police, airports or bridges.
- Kinshasa area ↗Check your own government's advice for Kinshasa and the DRC before every leg; do not travel to the east on your own.

Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Kinshasa is a very large river city with few pavements, heavy traffic and frequent checkpoints. Most governments advise against travel to the east of the country and caution for the capital, where street crime, demonstrations and infectious-disease outbreaks are real risks. A stay that works is short, based in Gombe, arranged with a reputable local contact, and moved by a hired car and driver. Four small clusters are the only places this page treats as walkable, and only in daylight and with local guidance.
Fits
- Organised short stays with a hired driver
- Travellers with a local contact or operator
- Music and art interest, seen with a guide
Does not fit
- Independent budget wandering
- Strollers and wheelchairs (no pavements)
- First-time Africa travellers with no operator
- 2 days
- Gombe morning + river front, Lingwala cathedral with a guide
- 3 days
- Four clusters, mornings only, with a hired driver
- 4 days
- Three days + one flexible day for the bonobo sanctuary trip with your operator
- Don't confuse
- Kinshasa (DRC) and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo) face each other across the river; they are separate countries with separate visas and a border that is not a casual crossing.

- Gombe centre: Daylight cluster: banks, hotels and the crafts market; the only part of the city this page treats as walkable, and only with a guide or driver near.
- Gombe river front: River-view cluster: hotels and terraces on the Congo River; stay on hotel grounds or terraces and photograph only what a guide clears.
- Lingwala: Cathedral cluster: one daylight visit with a driver waiting; no walking beyond the cathedral precinct.
- Marché central: Market cluster: only with a local guide, only in the morning, with a day bag worn in front and no phone in the hand.

- Sleep area Gombe river-front hotels: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.

Arrive & move
Getting in, getting around, and your bags
Arrive
Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.
Move
The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.
- Default
- Hired car with a driver you know; walk only inside a hotel block or a short daylight stretch with a guide.
- Passes
- No pass. Fix the price and the currency with the driver before you set off; a day rate is usually cheaper than separate rides.
- Last trains
- No rail or metro; roads jam from about 15:30, so finish outings before then.

Luggage
Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.
Rule
- Lockers
- No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at the Kinshasa hotel for any trip away.
- Dead zone
- Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower room; confirm the car for the airport the night before.

- IC card
- No transit card: a hired car and driver, or your hotel's car; US dollars are often quoted, so agree the currency with the price.
- Cash rule
- Do not rely on ATMs; carry clean, recent US dollar notes and small CDF notes, and change money only through your hotel or a trusted contact.
Survive
Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.
Safety
- Street crime, including armed robbery, and demonstrations occur: avoid gatherings, keep valuables out of sight and move by car.
- Carry your passport or a certified copy and your yellow-fever certificate; checkpoints are frequent and the certificate is checked at the airport.
- Save your hotel's, driver's, embassy's and insurer's numbers; local emergency numbers may not connect reliably.
- Check current health advice: infectious-disease outbreaks occur in the DRC, and malaria prevention needs a travel-clinic visit weeks ahead.
Red lines
- Do not photograph government buildings, police, soldiers, bridges, the airport or river ports.
- Ask before photographing people; a guide should make the introduction.
- Greet properly before any request; skipping greetings is rude.
Practical
- French is the working language; Lingala is widely spoken in Kinshasa.
- Bottled or treated water only.
- Bring US dollar notes that are clean and recent; worn notes are often refused.
