Kinshasa

Kinshasa is a hire-a-driver city: land in daylight to a pre-booked car, sleep in Gombe, keep every move door to door, and check your government's advice before you book and again before you fly.

Kinshasa is a very large river city with few pavements, heavy traffic and frequent checkpoints. Most governments advise against travel to the east of the country and caution for the capital, where street crime, demonstrations and infectious-disease outbreaks are real risks. A stay that works is short, based in Gombe, arranged with a reputable local contact, and moved by a hired car and driver. Four small clusters are the only places this page treats as walkable, and only in daylight and with local guidance.

N'djili International Airport (FIH)
FIH to Gombe: one pre-booked hotel or operator car, 60–120 minutes on a congested road — the risk is not the ride but landing with no booked car, since unofficial taxis at N'djili are not safe.

Get around

Hired car with a driver you know; walk only inside a hotel block or a short daylight stretch with a guide.

Passes
No pass. Fix the price and the currency with the driver before you set off; a day rate is usually cheaper than separate rides.
Late at night

  • Unofficial e-visa sites: Use the embassy or the official .gouv.cd portal only.
  • Money changers: Banks or hotels; refuse old or torn dollar notes in change.
  • River-port fees: Pre-arranged fixer and receipts.
