Tzintzuntzán was the Purépecha capital before the Spanish arrived, and its five round yácata pyramids still look out over Lake Pátzcuaro from a hillside platform. The modern town is small and quiet. Most travellers see the ruins and the 16th-century monastery in three or four hours, then move on to Pátzcuaro, 18 km south, which has the beds, buses and restaurants.

Getting around

The town is walkable. The ruins sit on a hill about 1.5 km from the centre, up Av. Las Yacatas — a 20–25 min walk or a short taxi ride. For anything beyond town you need a car, taxi or combi; combis and buses run between Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzán and Quiroga along MEX 120.

Watch out

Safety

Tzintzuntzán is a small, calm town and the usual precautions are enough: daylight visits, no valuables left in the car, and check road conditions before driving at night. Michoacán has areas with security problems — stay on the main lake circuit and check current local advice.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September; go to the ruins in the morning.
  • The ruins are an open hillside with little shade — hat, water, sunscreen.
  • Few places serve dinner in town; eat before 18:00 or drive to Pátzcuaro.
  • Noche de Muertos (1–2 Nov) fills every bed in the region: book weeks ahead.
  • Check current opening hours and ticket prices on site or with the Michoacán tourism office before you go.
