Kingman sits on I-40 halfway between Las Vegas and Flagstaff, on the longest surviving stretch of Route 66. The historic downtown is small and walkable, with a Route 66 museum, a railroad museum and a 1907 depot. Most travellers use it as a one-night stopover, not a destination.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and motels are spread along I-40 and Andy Devine Ave. KART runs four bus lines six days a week (Mon–Sat), useful for downtown and Stockton Hill Rd only. Old Route 66 through town is called Andy Devine Avenue.

Watch out

Safety

Kingman is a small, low-crime desert town; the real risks are summer heat, unshaded trails and long drives on empty roads. Keep water in the car and fuel above a quarter tank.
  • Summer daytime heat: carry water on any trail; Monolith Garden has no shade and no water.
  • Rattlesnakes on desert trails, especially Monolith Garden and White Cliffs.
  • Amtrak's Kingman stop has no ticket office or machine: buy online or at another station before you travel.
  • Distances between town and the Hualapai Mountains need a car; taxis and rideshare are thin.
  • Desert nights drop close to freezing in winter even when days are mild.
