Rome sits where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers meet to form the Coosa, in Georgia's northwest hills about 1 h 15 min from Atlanta and 1 h from Chattanooga. It is a small city of roughly 35,000 people with a compact historic downtown, one serious museum and a college campus that is unusually large. It works as a one-night stop on a north Georgia drive rather than a destination in itself.
