- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

The Catalinas rise straight out of Tucson's desert floor to Mount Lemmon at 2,791 m (9,157 ft) — a sky island where the temperature drops about 11°C (20°F) from base to summit and where snow falls in winter. The Catalina Highway (Sky Island Scenic Byway) is the only road up, climbing through cactus, oak and pine to Summerhaven and Ski Valley, the southernmost ski area in the United States. At the foot, Sabino Canyon and Pusch Ridge Wilderness carry the desert trails; the summit carries the observatory, the cookie cabin and cool summer air.

What are the best hikes in Santa Catalina Mountains?
For an easy day, the Sabino Canyon tram and trails at the south foot; Seven Falls in Bear Canyon is a moderate 3–4 hour walk. On the mountain, summit trails around Ski Valley and Summerhaven are cooler in summer. Pusch Ridge Wilderness has the hardest routes and bans bikes, horses and dogs.
When is the best time to visit Santa Catalina Mountains?
March, April, October and November are the best all-round months: dry, clear and comfortable at both the desert base and the summit. Summer is hot below and stormy in the afternoon; winter can bring snow and ice to the upper highway, so use 4WD or chains.
Do I need a permit to drive the Catalina Highway?

Can I see snow or ski near Tucson?
Yes. The summit is about 11°C (20°F) cooler than the base and snow falls in winter; Ski Valley is the southernmost ski area in the United States, with short runs. The upper road can be icy, so check conditions first.
Is altitude a problem on Mount Lemmon?
The drive climbs from roughly 760 m in Tucson to 2,791 m (9,157 ft) at the summit in under an hour, so altitude sickness is possible. Drink water, take the climb slowly and watch for headaches.
