Orvieto sits on a tufa cliff above the A1 and the Rome–Florence line, about 1 h 15 min from Rome by train. The walled centre is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, but the Duomo, the wells and the underground tunnels fill a full day. Most travellers see it as a stop between Rome and Florence; staying one night gets you the cathedral square before the coaches arrive.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrian and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. From the station, the funicular runs up to Piazza Cahen, then Bus A continues to Piazza del Duomo and Bus B to Piazza della Repubblica. Driving into the upper town is not worth it: park at the station or on Via Roma (restaurant voucher) and ride up.

Watch out

Safety

Orvieto is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are uneven tufa steps and dark tunnels, summer heat on the walls, and pickpockets in the Duomo square in high season.
  • Upper-town parking is very limited and many streets are pedestrianised; leave the car below.
  • The funicular and buses stop in the evening: check the last run before a late dinner.
  • Pozzo della Cava closes on Mondays for most of the year (open daily 23 Dec to the Sunday after Epiphany).
  • Orvieto Underground tours run at fixed times and sell out in summer: book or arrive early.
  • Summer afternoons on the tufa are hot and shadeless along the walls.
